The CIVICUS Civil Society Index (CSI) team is pleased to announce its call for statements of interest to implement the CSI in five African countries in partnership with UNDP:

Guinea, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Botswana

If your organization is based in one of these countries and is interested in implementing the CSI, please let us know at index@civicus.org and we will be sending you a full application form. Please note that amongst the selection criteria are a broad-based constituency at the national level as well as experience and background in both advocacy and research.

The selection process will end on the 18th of September and future partner organizations will be informed in early October 2007. Applications received after the 18 of September 2007 will not be considered. The project implementation shall start in December 2007 and span over most of 2008.

Background on the Civil Society Index:

The CIVICUS Civil Society Index is a participatory needs assessment and action planning tool for civil society around the world, with the aim of creating a knowledge base and momentum for civil society strengthening initiatives. The CSI is initiated and implemented by, and for, civil society organizations at the country level. It also actively involves and disseminates its findings to a broad range of stakeholders including government, donors, academics and the public at large.

Over the years 2003-2006 the CSI was implemented in 53 countries around the world. Each country produced a final Country Report and the results of the project were published in two volumes by the title of CIVICUS Global Survey of the State of Civil Society,  Country Profiles (published in May 2007), and Comparative Perspectives (to be published in December 2007) by Kumarian Press.
