Any machinists or toolmakers out there? I just had a pacemaker put in and I looked on the web for info on EMI in a machine shop environment. Best I could come up with is that I shouldn't run a chain saw. Not much help. The EDM manufacturers say they don't reccomend anyone with a pacemaker to operate an EDM machine. But what about surface grinders with electro-magnetic chucks? How close can I get? What about Mills and Lathes? Or sonic cleaning tanks. Or even die grinders? Where can I find out if a pacemaker has ended my 40 year career as a toolmaker? I dont fancy loosing my job and house ect... but I guess it's better than being dead. rsmith6427@att.net Roch Smith

it's been real sore l8ly but my next check up isn't till like th eend of novenber.... what will i do if it is a major problem caus ei haven't got the time for surgery in december!!

I was turning on a faulty lamp (i threw out) and it shocked me pretty good, im kinda worried about my PM, does anyone kno what problem may occur, I feel ok..

What is the latest information on mobile phone jammers. I know the hand held ones cannot be used by people with pacemakers...but what are the effects of the more powerful wall-mounted jammers in public buildings?

Just had to share this one...
I recently purchased an ipod and I had it in my pocket(away from the pacemaker). Had the earbuds in. It must have bumped against something as I moved about because it shut itself off. I reached in and pressed the on button. Felt a jolt to my system like I never experienced before. It was really frighteneing. All I remember was hoping I could call 911 before I collapsed. I quickly tossed the ipod on the desk and moved away.
Had chest pain and felt out of sorts for awhile, but my heart rate returned to normal quite quickly.
I'm thinking maybe there was a power surge when I turned it on, and the wires to the earbuds were over the pacemaker, even though the ipod itself was...

 

My husaband had had a hip replacement, brain operation after being beaten 38x in thehead with a steal baseball bat.(They did not think he would wake up after surgery). He was awaiting back surgery & the police picked him up on suspicion of bank robbery, running a& jumping 8 ft. fence.(totally incapable). I called the institution & told them he is on 800 mg. of morphine a day if you cut him off he has several aneurysms(sitting in several places),he'll have a heart attack, aneurysm or die. He had a heart attack and has a pacemaker. It wasn't working properly .It took 3 months for them to take him in he went into seizures. Now they want to do a full body (he's not sure)MRI or ct scan.Where do I get the do & don't's of people with pacemake...

 

hello. ok, so i just found this website and it looks helpful. heres the deal, i want to get a tattoo on the side of my neck, right behind my ear. i already have one on my hip. but ive been reading all these things and its making me question whether i should do it or not. when i got the one on my hip it was a homeade gun n my friends garage. its a tiny paw print about 4-5inches and it hurt like HELL! it felt like my pacemaker kept shocking me and i was freaking out, my friends lil brother had to hold one of those fans in my face &the water comes out. terrible experience, i figure 1.it was a homeade gun& 2. i have herrington rods in my back also from scoliosis, and it was right by my scar.i thought that was the cause of the pain. anyways.. s...

emm ok this may sound weird but...
when i was in class the other day my PM (i think it was my pm anyway) started to hurt. It's happened a couple of times and its soo random nothing around me changes jjust pain inside and a kinda hollow feeling!
I shouldn't need a new PM till next sep. but i'm kinda worried.
I had my PM checked this year soo yea =]

I'm 19 and I've had a pacermaker for the past 13 years. I'm like 90%+ dependent. I've never had any problems before but I do have a question about rollercoasters. We've always been so busy that theme parks just got pushed to the side or something weird happens (one time we went it basically rained us out and the next father got really sick- long story there) and family vacations went to mountains, beaches, or road trips.

I was just wondering what everyone's opinion on rollercoasters, well more than just rollercoasters, theme park rides in general, and since I rely on the pm so much is it safe?

 

I was very saddened to hear that working with or even wearing magnetic hematite could interfere with my pacemaker/defibrillator. Some of those magnets are pretty strong. Not sure about magnetic clasps on some necklaces and bracelets.

 

I'm told that I must discontune using my arc welder, My pacemaker was installed yesterday. Is the problem the machine or the arc? Can a I just do welding some distance fom the machine? How about all my electric drills and grinders? Some of them plug into the wall. Some are battery powered. Is there some kind of protective clothing like that apron the dentst throws over my lap when making an xray. As a metal smith,I can make a lead vest. Or buy a suit of medieval armor. Help! I am not ready to give up sculpture and go back to painting.

Hi All, day 2 with my PM. Very glad to find this site. I work in a refinery and besides the many hazards for anyone working there, I have concerns about being around some of the large electric motors used to drive some of our pumps. Some are as large as a small car and are upwards of 1200 - 5000hp. I also have concerns about entering what is called an MCC room. Mechanical Control Center. This is where all of the electrical breakers for plant equipment are. All different voltages up to 2300kva. It's early here and I'm waiting to contact St Jude Med later today but, does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing? I read on the fabulous internet that I can get as close as, No Problem to 25 feet.

 

I've had my PM for 8+ months now and I'm wondering how would I know (how would I feel) if something were interfering with my pacemaker? For example, I gave blood today and apparently there is a machine they are supposed to turn off while I'm in the room. If that didn't happen, how would I know or what would I expect to feel?

Well, we found out that a John Deere Zero turn riding mower is a big no no! Monday hubby went out to cut some grass, figured a riding mower was nice and easy, no problems.

He was on that thing from about 9 am to 2 pm, got lots of grass cut. Got off, felt bad. Figured it was the heat.

Had a check up the next day. They asked him what he did yesterday from 9 am to 2 pm. He played dumb for some reason. Oh nothing, just tinkering around. They replied with;
Well whatever you were tinkering around with shut your pacemaker down from 9 to 2. And then they went back over the past few weeks and sure enough everytime he cut the grass you could see where it shut down, went into safety mode or whatever its called.

I was wondering if with pacemaker you are allowed to have the electical stimulation that they use when they do physical therapy? I am a bit confused because I know you cant use a TENS unit, is that considered the same thing?

 

Hi Everyone,
just over 1 week since implant and that side of things going really well. However, been back into hospital with acute lower back and leg pain. (canal stenosis). Back out again today.

I have been told that an exercise bike (not recumbant) is the best form of exercise for this.
Went to the shops and all the bikes are magnetic drag. They all create a magnetic field when you pedal them.
Any thoughts or advice appreciated.
There must be exercise bikes that people with PM's can use safely.
